01 — About
Self-taught, and still climbing.
I write software full time from Nepal. Most of what I know came from building things that had to actually work.
I'm a developer from Palungtar, Gorkha — the middle hills, a day's walk from anywhere with a bus park. These days I build web applications with PHP and Laravel, and I spend most of my time on products made for people here rather than for someone else's market.
The bulk of that has gone into Shikshara, a multi-tenant platform that lets a school run its admissions, attendance, fees, exams and results from one place. It's built for Nepali schools specifically — Bikram Sambat dates, the CDC curriculum, the way fees actually get collected here — because the international products never quite fit and the local ones were mostly spreadsheets.
Along the way I've picked up multi-tenancy, queue workers, payment integrations, and the particular discipline of keeping one codebase safe when it serves many organisations at once. I'm currently learning Flutter to bring the same system into people's pockets.
When I'm not at the keyboard I'm usually walking somewhere high. That's what the rest of this site is for.

Every ridge in this country has a temple on it. Most are not on any map and have no visitors and are looked after anyway. That, more than the famous ones, is what Nepal actually looks like.

Nepal is about eight hundred kilometres end to end, and on a motorbike you feel every one of them. We rode most of that to stand in a field of tea in the cold.

Gorkha is a modest town on a ridge in the middle hills. It is also the place a small kingdom set out from in 1743 and did not stop until it had become the country I live in.
